KINGSTON, R.I. – George Mason senior starter
Brian Marconi turned in a strong outing, striking out a season-high eight batters and freshman
Nick Zegna picked up his first career save to lead the Patriots to a 3-1 win in the series-opener against Rhode Island on Friday afternoon at Bill Beck Field in Kingston, R.I.
Mason (16-25, 3-10 A-10) took the lead over Rhode Island (17-21, 8-5 A-10) in the top of the first against Rams sophomore starter Ryan Twitchell.
Mason senior outfielder
Brady Acker hit his sixth home run of the season, a solo blast to left field to put the Patriots in front 1-0.
Acker has hit five home runs in his last five games. As a team, the Patriots have belted 12 round-trippers over the last 14 games.
Rhode Island dented the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth. Rams senior infielder Kevin Heiss led off with a walk and scored on a double by sophomore first baseman Xavier Vargas to tie the score, 1-1.
Marconi kept the Rams guessing throughout the day, allowing just three hits in the outing. He retired 12 of 14 batters after allowing the RBI-double in the fourth, including four straight strikeouts.
In the top of the fifth, Mason senior shortstop
Alejandro Aponte led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Junior catcher
Logan Driscoll was then walked intentionally.
After the runners advanced to second and third on a wild pitch, Acker drove in Aponte with a RBI-single and Driscoll raced home on an error to give the Patriots a 3-1 lead.
The Patriots snapped a 13-game slide on the road, winning away from Spuhler Field for the first time since a 4-3 victory at Longwood on Feb. 26.
Marconi (3-6) allowed one run on three hits with eight strikeouts and five walks and equaled his season-high with 6.0 innings of work to earn the win. Zegna didn't allow a hit over the final three innings to pick up his first collegiate save.
Acker went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI, while Aponte and Driscoll each had a hit and scored a run.
The Patriots and Rams play the middle game of the series on Saturday, with the first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m. at Bill Beck Field in Kingston, R.I.
