ORLANDO, Fla. – The George Mason University women's tennis team saw its solid season come to a close Wednesday afternoon during an Atlantic 10 first round setback to No. 7 seed Fordham at the USTA National Campus.
The Patriots finish the 2018-19 campaign with a 17-10 record and now say farewell to seniors
Sydney Green and
Lauren Dupuis, who will graduate from Mason and pursue their professional careers.
Green wrapped up a stellar career Wednesday in which she recorded 100+ victories and commanded the No. 1 singles and doubles spots for much of her four seasons. She will be greatly missed.
Fordham's 4-0 victory was kickstarted by a sparkful effort in doubles. The Rams claimed victories at No. 1 and No. 3 to take the early 1-0 lead. At No. 2, freshmen
Hannah Harrod and
Jackie Nannery were locked in a tight 4-3 battle before play was called and the match moved to singles.
In singles, the Rams completed their victory with straight sets wins at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 6 singles.
In the other three singles matches, Mason had solid chances in each when competition ended in the play-to-clinch format.
At No. 3, sophomore
Hannah Yang led 3-2 in the second set after being narrowly defeated in the first (4-6).
At No. 4, Harrod trailed just 1-0 in the second frame after falling in a tight 5-7 showdown in the opening set.
Nannery also was in a close contest at No. 5 after narrowly being edged in the first set (5-7).
Mason returns six of the seven student-athletes who competed Wednesday in what should be a momentum-building campaign in 2020.
