FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason baseball team dropped the final game of its series to Dayton, 13-3, on Sunday afternoon at Spuhler Field in Fairfax, Va.

The Patriots (15-23, 2-10 A-10) fell behind Dayton (22-17-1, 10-5 A-10) when the Flyers scored a pair of runs in the top of the first against Mason freshman starter Jared Lyons.

Dayton senior outfielder Connor Echols drove in a run with double and later scored on a fielding error to put the Flyers in front 2-0.

The Patriots responded in the bottom of the first against Flyers junior starter R.J. Wagner.  Mason senior outfielder Brady Acker and senior first baseman Tim Quinn both singled.  Junior catcher Bailey Klein then singled in a run and Quinn scrambled across the plate on a wild pitch to tie the score 2-2.

Dayton sent 10 batters to the plate in the second against Lyons and Mason sophomore reliever Michael Yuille.  The Flyers scored seven runs on four hits and four walks to take a 9-2 lead.

In the top of the third, Flyers sophomore Michael Cleary led off with a double and scored on a RBI-single by sophomore outfielder Mitchell Garrity to make the score 10-2.  After a walk, the Flyers tacked on two more runs when junior infielder Eddie Pursinger doubled off the wall in left-center to increase the advantage to 12-2.

Mason sophomore James Price came on in relief and ended the inning with a pair of groundouts.  Price didn't allow a hit to the first 11 batters he faced in the game.

Acker hit his second home run in as many games in the bottom of the seventh to account for Mason's final run of the day, while Dayton added a run on back-to-back doubles in the top of the eighth for the 13-3 final score.

Lyons (0-2) allowed seven runs, six earned, on four hits in 1.1 innings and took the loss.  Yuille surrendered five runs on five hits in 1.0 inning.  Price gave up one run on five hits with three strikeouts in 5.2 innings.  Freshman Hugh O'Hara pitched the ninth for the Patriots.

Wagner allowed two runs on eight hits with four strikeouts and one walk in 4.0 innings in a no-decision for the Flyers.  Sophomore Aaron Ernst (1-6) gave up one run on two hits with four strikeouts and a walk in 4.0 innings to earn his first win of the season.  Junior Tyler Jones pitched the ninth for Dayton.

Acker went 3-for-5 and hit his third home run of the season, while Reckling was 2-for-4 with a walk for the Patriots.

Every player in the starting lineup for the Flyers reached base at least two times in the game.

The Patriots continue their six-game homestand, hosting William & Mary on Tuesday and Navy on Wednesday at Spuhler Field.  The first pitch for both games is scheduled for 3 p.m.
