FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason University women's tennis team wrapped up the regular season on a momentum-building note, taking down Maryland Eastern Shore 7-0 on Saturday afternoon at the Mason Tennis Complex.
In the final home match for seniors
Sydney Green and
Lauren Dupuis, the Patriots did not drop a set during a dominating victory which improved the team to 17-9 on the year, just one win off the program-best mark under head coach Steve Curtis.
The victory also ensured a split for the Patriots on the weekend, as Mason fell 7-0 at George Washington on Friday afternoon.
On Saturday in doubles, Mason dropped just one game between its three teams. Green and sophomore
Brianna Gibbs claimed victory at No. 1 (6-1), while freshmen
Jackie Nannery and
Hannah Harrod swept No. 2 doubles, 6-0. Junior
Rachel Lee and Dupuis won 6-0 at No. 3 to ensure the doubles tandems would all head into singles victorious.
In singles, Green led the way at No. 1, defeating UMES' Adewumi in straight sets (6-3, 6-0). Freshman
Marium Raza got her first start at No. 2 and made the most of it. The Savannah, Ga., product did not drop a game during a 6-0, 6-0 sweep.
At No. 3, sophomore
Christine McCarthy won 6-0, 6-1 over Kenza Katema, while Lee took down UMES' Sarah Smith at No. 4, 6-0, 6-0.
Rounding out the day, sophomore
Kayleigh Hahn took a victory at No. 5 (6-0, 6-0) over Benita Kiabilua, while Dupuis brought down Tiara Barnes at No. 6 by the same sweeping score (6-0, 6-0).
Mason now heads to the annual Atlantic 10 Championships in Orlando, Fla., next week. The Patriots begin play on Wednesday (April 24) at the USTA National Campus.
