ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Sophomore
Florian Blatti put together a consistent round on a difficult course to lead the George Mason University men's golf team on day one of the Navy Spring Invitational.
On the Naval Academy Golf Course, Blatti converted 15 pars and added a birdie to sit in a tie for sixth place out of 85 golfers through 18 holes of play. His two-over par 73 puts him just two shots off the lead heading into Saturday's final round.
Although the Green & Gold are fielding a four-player team in Annapolis and don't have the luxury of dropping a score, Mason still is in a solid tie for seventh out of 15 teams at the event. The Patriots are a combined +21 (305), while Saint Joseph's leads the event after opening with a combined 293 (+6).
In addition to Blatti, freshman
JP Miller manufactured a good round, particularly on his inward nine. After going out in three-over par 38, Miller quickly made a birdie on No. 10, then tallied six pars and a pair of birdies down the stretch to finish up with a 75 (+4). That score is tied for 19
th place.
Freshman
William Christian is tied for 31
st place after shooting a six-over par 77. Christian opened his round with an even-par 35 on the front side, which included birdies on No. 2 and No. 5. Despite making bogeys on his last five holes, Christian can channel the momentum from that early part of his round heading into his final 18 holes on Saturday.
Wrapping up the Patriot contingent, junior
Takahiro Nojima Is tied for 55
th with a score of 80 (+9). Nojima carded a steady round which included 12 pars, but struggled on holes 13 and 15, which he played in a combined +5.
The Patriots finish up the Navy Spring Invitational on Saturday.
