Patriots Host Dayton in Atlantic 10 Series

FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason baseball team resumes Atlantic 10 play, hosting Dayton for a three-game series beginning Friday at Spuhler Field.  The first pitch for game one of the series is scheduled for 3 p.m.

Last time out, Mason (14-21, 1-8 A-10) scored the first seven runs of the game and defeated Maryland, 9-5, on Wednesday at Spuhler Field. 

Sophomore designated hitter Aaron Yurko went 2-for-3 and drove in three runs, while junior right fielder Bailey Klein was 2-for-3 with a home run, two RBI and three runs scored.  Freshman starter Patrick Halligan tossed six and two-thirds innings to earn his third win of the season.

The Patriots have hit five home runs in their last eight games.

Mason junior catcher Logan Driscoll leads the team in average (.344), hits (43), home runs (8), RBI (27), walks (26) and runs scored (30) in 34 games played. 
 
Sophomore outfielder Cam Reckling is second on the team with a .282 average and is also second on the squad in hits (37) and runs scored (27) in 33 games played.  He is tied for second on the club in doubles (8) and is fifth in RBI (15).

Senior outfielder Brady Acker is third on the club in average (.277) and is tied for second on the team in doubles (8) in 21 games played.  He has walked 25 times, third-most on the team.

Senior shortstop Alejandro Aponte is batting .270 and is tied for third on the team in hits (33) and is third in runs scored (22) in 35 games played.

The Patriots have a team batting average of .250 and a team ERA of 7.06 through 35 games this season.

Mason took two-of-three from Dayton the last time the two teams played at Spuhler Field April 8-10, 2016.  The Patriots dropped game one, 9-2, before winning the last two games of the series, 8-2 and 9-6.

The Patriots are 7-3 all-time against the Flyers.

SCOUTING REPORT

Dayton has an overall record of 20-16-1, including a mark of 8-4 against Atlantic 10 opponents.  The Flyers are 10-6 at home and 9-10-1 on the road this season.

Last time out, the Flyers scored three runs in the top of the ninth for a 4-1 win over Eastern Michigan on Tuesday in Ypsilanti, Mich.

Freshman infielder Benjamin Blackwell leads the team in average (.315), is fifth on the team in hits (34) and tied for fourth in runs scored (23) in 33 games played.  He is second on the Flyers with 13 stolen bases (13-for-18).

Junior first baseman Eddie Pursinger is tied for second on the club in average (.267) and is tied for the team lead in hits (36) and RBI (22) in 36 games played.  He leads the Flyers in home runs (6) and walks (27).

Sophomore outfielder Mitchell Garrity is tied for second on the team in average (.267) and is fourth in hits (32) and third in doubles (7) in 33 games played.  He is sixth on the Flyers in RBI (15).

The Flyers have 82 stolen bases this season (82-for-101).

On the mound, junior Hunter Wolfe (5-4, 3.63) leads the team in starts (9), wins (5), innings pitched (57.0) and strikeouts (58).  Junior R.J. Wagner (3-2, 3.79) is second on the club in starts (5), wins (3), innings pitched (40.1) and is third in strikeouts (35).

Dayton has a team batting average of .247 and a team ERA of 4.95 through 37 games.

STRIKE ZONE

The Patriots faced the Flyers in the opening game of the Atlantic 10 Tournament on May 21, 2014, scoring the game-winning run in the bottom of the 11th inning to edge Dayton, 4-3, in St. Louis, Mo.

In the program's first season in the conference, Mason went on to win four games to claim the A-10 Tournament title, also recording a win over Saint Joseph's and two against VCU to advance to the Houston Regional in the NCAA Tournament.
