PHILADELPHIA – The George Mason University women's tennis team picked up its second A-10 win in three opportunities this weekend with a 4-2 victory over Saint Joseph's on Sunday afternoon at Hawk Hill.
The Patriots (16-8, 2-3) won four of six contested singles matches to pick up the victory. Mason has just two more matches remaining before the Atlantic 10 Championship.
The match began with singles, where Saint Joseph's started strong with a victory at No. 3 singles. The Hawks went up 2-0 after a win at No. 5, but from there, the Patriots began to assert themselves.
Sophomore
Brianna Gibbs put together an efficient victory at No. 2, winning her first set 6-4, then earning a 6-3, second-set triumph to defeat Isis Gill-Reid.
Then, at No. 4, freshman
Hannah Harrod continued her outstanding recent play with a straight sets victory over Paige Conrad (6-2, 6-2). Harrod is 4-1 in her previous five singles contests.
Mason moved within one point of victory after a solid showing from freshman
Marium Raza at No. 6. She trailed after one set (4-6), but rebounded to win the second, 6-1. She then took the third, 6-2, to improve to an impressive 9-1 in dual singles this season.
From there, senior
Sydney Green clinched the match with a stellar showing over SJU standout Amanda Nava. Green won her first set, 7-5 then after falling in the second (6-2), Green channeled her A-Game to win the third 6-3, and wrap up the victory for Mason.
"Sydney played perhaps the best match of her career to secure the win," head coach Steve Curtis said. "Nava has been having an incredible season and is being considered for A-10 Player of the Year."
Mason is back in the DMV on Friday (April 19) with a contest at Revolutionary Rival George Washington. First serve in D.C. is set for 3:30 p.m.
