PHILADELPHIA – The George Mason University women's tennis team began an important Atlantic 10 weekend in efficient fashion, dispatching of La Salle in a clean 4-0 sweep on Friday afternoon in Philadelphia.
The Patriots won all three doubles matches, then won in straight sets in the first three contested singles matches to improve to 15-7 on the year.
Mason earned its first win of the day at No. 3 doubles, where the partnership of junior
Rachel Lee and sophomore
Hannah Yang gelled to knock off the Explorers' Walle/Malhotra duo, 6-1. Then at No. 2, the Patriots' freshman duo of
Hannah Harrod and
Jackie Nannery matched that score in a 6-1 drubbing of Brittany Poje and Aleks Nikolic. The Green & Gold made it three for three after senior
Sydney Green and sophomore
Brianna Gibbs powered past the Theophil/Snyder team at No. 1, 6-4.
In singles, Mason increased the lead to 2-0 after Harrod won 12 of 13 games at No. 3. She won her first set, 6-0, over Poje, then claimed victory in the second, 6-1. The victory improved Harrod to 10-5 in dual singles this season.
At No. 4, Nannery cruised in her first set (6-1), then remained steady in a second set tiebreaker. She easily won the extra points, 7-2, to improve to 12-3 in dual singles play.
Mason clinched the match at No. 1, where Green won her first set, 6-4, over Theophil, then took the second, 7-5.
The Patriots remain in Philadelphia for two more A-10 matches this weekend. Next up is Duquesne on Saturday (April 13) at 11 a.m.
