FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason University women's tennis team dropped a Wednesday afternoon contest to A-10 leader VCU at the Mason Tennis Complex.
The Patriots (14-7) worked their way through a number of well-contested sets but could not quite convert in them, as the Rams (14-5) won the first four matches to clinch the contest in Fairfax.
In doubles, Mason's No. 1 duo of
Sydney Green and
Brianna Gibbs took three games off the league's top tandem of Rasmussen/Witmus, while the Patriots' No. 2 team of
Jackie Nannery and
Hannah Harrod claimed two game victories.
In singles, freshman
Marium Raza used her solid game at the baseline to find herself in a battle at No. 6. When the match was called, the Savannah, Ga., product was all tied up at 6-6 in the opening frame with Melissa Ifidzhen of VCU.
Elsewhere, sophomore
Brianna Gibbs was knotted up with VCU's No. 2 late in her first set (4-4), but Rasmussen ultimately won the final two games to take the set. In the second, Gibbs trailed by just one game (2-1) when her match was called.
At No. 1, Green took three games off of Paola Diaz-Delgado at the top spot, and trailed by just two (2-4) in the second set when it was wrapped up.
VCU claimed victory on the strength of singles wins at No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5.
Mason now hits the road for three important A-10 contests this weekend in Philadelphia. First up is a matchup with La Salle on Friday (April 12) at 2 p.m.
