TOWSON, Md. – The George Mason baseball team fell to Towson, 8-3, on Wednesday at Schuerholz Park in Towson, Md.
The Patriots (13-19, 1-8 A-10) fell behind Towson (5-26, 1-5 CAA) in the second inning when the Tigers broke through against Mason freshman starter
Nate Young.
After two walks, Tigers freshman outfielder Isaiah Winikur doubled to left field with one out to put Towson in front 2-0. The Tigers added a run on a groundout to make it a 3-0 game.
The Tigers doubled their lead with one out in the third. After two singles and a walk loaded the bases, junior outfielder Jack Rotteveel drove in two runs with a single and freshman catcher Trent Gast-Woodard knocked in a run with a single to extend the lead to 6-0.
Winikur added a two-run double off of Mason sophomore reliever
James Price in the bottom of the fifth to make the score 8-0.
In the top of the eighth, senior
Greg Popatak II drove in Mason's first run of the game with a single and junior catcher
Bailey Klein followed with a two-run homer.
Mason fell to 1-13 on the road, while Towson improved to 4-9 at home on the season.
Young (1-2) allowed six runs on six hits with two strikeouts and four walks in 2.2 innings and took the loss. Price surrendered two runs on one hit in 4.1 innings. Freshman
Hugh O'Hara retired the Tigers in order in the eighth.
Towson junior starter Connor Coyle (1-0) didn't allow a run and scattered four hits over 5.0 innings to earn his first collegiate win.
Klein went 1-for-4 with a home run, while sophomore infielder
Daniel Brooks was 3-for-4 in the game.
The Patriots open a three-game series against UNC Greensboro on Friday with the first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m. at UNCG Baseball Stadium in Greensboro, N.C.
