HARRISONBURG, Va. – The George Mason baseball team allowed six runs over the last four innings and dropped its mid-week, non-conference game against James Madison, 10-7, on Tuesday at Veterans Memorial Park in Harrisonburg, Va.
Mason (6-4) fell behind James Madison (8-4) in the second inning when the Dukes sent eight batters to the plate and scored four runs against Patriots starter
Patrick Halligan.
After two walks and a single loaded the bases, Dukes freshman infielder Nick Zona knocked in a run with a single and junior outfielder Fox Semones followed with a two-run single. The Dukes added another run on a groundout to take a 4-0 lead.
The Patriots then scored seven unanswered runs.
In the top of the third, Mason sophomore outfielder
Cam Reckling walked and sophomore second baseman
Daniel Brooks singled. Junior
Logan Driscoll, who made the start in center field, then hit a three-run home run over the right field fence to make it a 4-3 game.
Sophomore outfielder
Scott Morgan and Reckling each scored on a wild pitch in the fourth to put the Patriots in front, 5-4.
The Patriots extended the lead in the top of the sixth. Senior catcher
Bailey Klein drove in a run with a single and senior first baseman
Tim Quinn plated a run with a ground out to increase the lead to 7-4.
James Madison responded with six unanswered runs.
In the bottom of the sixth, freshman first baseman Brady Harju knocked in a pair of runs with a single to left field against Mason reliever
Michael Yuille to make it a one-run game at 7-6.
The Dukes took the lead in the seventh against Mason sophomore
James Price, scoring three runs to go back in front, 9-7.
James Madison added an insurance run in the eighth against Mason sophomore
Ryan Miles for the 10-7 final.
Halligan allowed four runs on five hits with three strikeouts and two walks over 3.0 innings in the no-decision.
Yuille surrendered two runs on five hits in 2.2 innings, while Price (0-1) allowed three runs, two earned, on three hits with two strikeouts in 1.1 innings and took the loss.
Miles gave up one run on one hit in one inning of work.
Driscoll hit his third home run of the season and went 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. He has hit a home run in each of the last two games.
Brooks and Morgan each collected two hits and scored a run, while Klein and Quinn each drove in a run for the Patriots.
The Patriots will host Manhattan for a three-game series beginning Friday, with the first pitch scheduled for 2:30 p.m. at Spuhler Field.
