FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason baseball team built a 4-1 lead over Richmond but fell to the Spiders, 10-7, on Sunday afternoon in the final game of the series at Pitt Field in Richmond, Va.
Mason (11-15, 0-6 A-10) fell behind Richmond (14-9-1, 3-0 A-10) in the first inning when the Spiders plated a run against Patriots freshman starter
Nate Young.
Richmond loaded the bases with three walks and with one out, senior catcher Kyle Schmidt drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to center field to put the Spiders in front 1-0.
The Patriots took advantage of four walks and responded in the top of the second against Richmond senior starter Brendan McGuigan.

Greg Popatak II was hit by a pitch. Senior designated hitter
Ryan Tassone then singled through the right side, with Quinn racing home to tie the score, 1-1.
Sophomore outfielder
Cam Reckling gave the Patriots the lead when he drew a bases loaded walk to make it a 2-1 game.
In the fourth, Tassone was hit by a pitch to start the inning and sophomore infielder
Daniel Brooks followed with a walk. Senior infielder
Alejandro Aponte put down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners to second and third.
After a strikeout, junior outfielder
Logan Driscoll singled off the glove of the pitcher, with Tassone crossing the plate to increase the lead to 3-1. A batter later, Brooks scrambled home on a wild pitch to make it 4-1 Mason.
Richmond put together a big inning in the bottom of the fourth, sending 11 batters to the plate and scoring 8 runs to take control of the game at 9-4.
The Spiders began their comeback when senior outfielder D.J. Lee led off the inning with a solo home run down the right field line to cut the Patriots lead to 4-2. In his second at-bat of the inning, Lee hit a grand slam over the right field fence.
The Spiders tacked on a run in the fifth on freshman infielder Brian Schaub's solo home run to make it a 10-4 game.
In the top of the sixth, Recking and Driscoll hit back-to-back one-out doubles to put runners on second and third. Quinn drove in a pair of runs with a single to left field to pull the Patriots within four runs at 10-6.
Mason plated another run on a sacrifice fly by Aponte in the seventh to cut the Richmond lead to 10-7, but the Patriots would get no closer.
The Spiders hit 13 home runs and outscored the Patriots 44-13 in the three-game series. Mason fell to 1-11 on the road, while Richmond improved to 11-5-1 at home.
Young allowed four runs on two hits in 3.0 innings with four strikeouts and five walks in a no-decision for the Patriots. Sophomore
Michael Yuille (1-1) gave up four runs on one hit in 0.2 innings and took the loss.
McGuigan allowed four runs on two hits in 3.0 innings with six strikeouts and four walks in a no-decision for the Spiders. Richmond sophomore Antonio Balducci (1-1) worked one scoreless inning and earned his first win of the season, while senior Layne Looney went the final two innings to pick up his fourth save of the year.
Tassone went 3-for-4 with a RBI and two runs scored, Quinn was 1-for-4 with two RBI and Driscoll finished 2-for-4 with a RBI and run scored.
The Patriots are back on the diamond when they travel to face Georgetown on Wednesday with the first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m. at Shirley Povich Field in Bethesda, Md.
