FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason University women's tennis team bounced back from a Friday setback to claim a solid 7-0 victory over DMV foe Coppin State on Saturday afternoon at the Mason Tennis Complex.
After falling to Delaware Friday, Mason took the steps necessary to grab a split on the weekend. The Patriots wrapped up each singles match in just two sets and received contributions from across the roster in the win.
"As a young team we haven't learned how to bring the needed intensity day to day and match to match," head coach Steve Curtis said. "We are still a work in progress, but this was a good way to wrap up the weekend."
In doubles, Mason won two out of three affairs, highlighted by a 6-1 victory by senior
Sydney Green and sophomore
Brianna Gibbs at No. 1. They've won their last four dual doubles matches as a tandem.
In singles, Green also played well, sweeping her match against Coppin State's Dunwell (6-0, 6-0). Gibbs also made quick work of her opponent at number two (6-4, 6-1).
Freshman
Jackie Nannery played the first No. 3 singles match of her career Saturday and made the most of the opportunity. She took the first set, 6-3, then went on to claim victory in the second by a 6-2 margin.
Freshman
Marium Raza also enjoyed an opportunity in the starting lineup and took control at No. 4. Raza swept her opening set (6-0) over Udofe of CSU. Then in the second, she won 6-2 to claim her seventh dual victory of the season.
At No. 6, junior
Rachel Lee also picked up a win for the Green & Gold. She won her first set, 6-0, then took the second, 6-1, for another Mason victory.
The Patriots are back at the Mason Tennis Courts on Thursday during a 3:30 p.m. matchup with UNC Wilmington.
