FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason University women's tennis team opened its busy home weekend Friday vs. Delaware but could not move past the Blue Hens, falling 6-1 at the Mason Tennis Complex.
The Patriots nearly won the doubles point and put together competitive matches in a number of singles contests.
Mason's No. 1 doubles team of senior
Sydney Green and sophomore
Brianna Gibbs picked up a win with a 6-3 triumph. That tandem has now won six dual matches on the year. At No. 3,
Hannah Yang and
Rachel Lee went to a tiebreaker with a chance to take the doubles point for the Patriots. They battled hard but fell 7-4 in the extra points.
In singles action, freshman
Jackie Nannery tallied a victory at No. 5 over Adetunji of Delaware. She cruised in her first set (6-4), then edged out a second set win (6-4) to claim the victory. She is now 8-2 in dual singles matches this season.
Her doubles partner, Harrod, went to three sets in her match and nearly pulled off the win at No. 4. After dropping her first set (6-1), Harrod fought back to claim the second, 6-4. However, Delaware's Gotkiewicz won the third set (6-3) to take that point. At No. 1, Green put together a strong match but was edged closely in two sets (6-4, 7-5).
Mason remains at home to take on Coppin State Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Mason Tennis Complex.
