FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason University women's tennis team opened its spring home slate in style with a 6-1 triumph over visiting Delaware State on Saturday afternoon at the Mason Tennis Complex.
In difficult and blustery conditions, the Patriots took care of business, starting with a clean sweep of the doubles point. Mason is now 10-4 in dual action in 2018-19.
All three Mason teams won 6-0, including senior
Sydney Green and sophomore
Brianna Gibbs at No. 1, freshmen
Jackie Nannery and
Hannah Harrod at No. 2 and sophomores
Hannah Yang and
Christine McCarthy at No. 3.
In singles, Mason continued that torrid pace. Green opened the scoring with a straight sets victory at No. 1 over Sofia Rachi (6-0, 6-3). Green has now won her previous three singles matches at the top spot.
Mason went up 3-0 after Nannery claimed a straight sets victory at No. 5 (6-2, 6-3). Then, junior
Rachel Lee increased the edge to 4-0 with a win at No. 6 (6-3, 6-0). It marked Lee's first dual victory of the season.
The Patriots also enjoyed a singles victory by Yang at No. 3. She edged Cassandra Boltman 7-5 in the opening frame, then took a 6-1 win in the second to wrap up the victory.
Mason's sixth point came courtesy of Harrod, who won a first set tiebreaker (7-3), then went on to cruise in her second set, 6-1.
The Patriots, originally scheduled to face Delaware and Mt. St. Mary's Sunday, will now face only the Mountaineers tomorrow in Emmitsburg (noon). The Patriots will now host Delaware on Friday (2:30 p.m.) in Fairfax.
