DAYTON, Ohio – In its Atlantic 10 opener, the George Mason softball team fell in both contests to Dayton on Saturday afternoon. The Patriots drop to 8-15 overall and 0-2 in A-10 play. Mason will round out the three-game series against the Flyers at noon on Sunday.
The Patriots were shutout in the opening game of the doubleheader, falling 2-0. It was a pitching duel between
Bekah Ansbro and Dayton's Jessica Gilliam. Ansbro struck out five batters against just one walk in a complete game effort.
The Flyers scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Mason recorded five hits in the contest, including a double by
Adriana Erickson. However, the Patriots were unable to capitalize on the opportunities, leaving all five runners on base.
In the second game of the doubleheader, Mason fell 7-1 to Dayton. The Patriots had chances to plate runs but ultimately left nine runners on base. A four-run bottom of the fifth inning for Dayton gave them a 5-0 advantage.
In the top of the sixth, Mason threatened to cut into the Flyers' lead after loading the bases.
Meghan Graham and Erickson drew walks while
Taylor Dadig doubled to left center. Freshman
Hannah Thomas came up to bat and drew a RBI walk to plate Mason's first run.
The Flyers responded with two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to claim the 7-1 win.
