PITTSBURGH, Pa. – George Mason redshirt seniors
Tejon Anthony and
Matthew Voss had their 2019 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships come to an end on Friday at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, Pa.
At 285 pounds, Voss won his second match of the championships, recording an 11-4 decision over Wyoming sophomore Brian Andrews, who was seeded No. 19, in the Consolation Round of 16 #2.
Voss registered an escape and a takedown in the first period to take a 3-2 advantage. In the second period, he then took control of the bout with a reversal, a point for a technical violation and a takedown with less than 10 seconds remaining in the period to build an 8-3 lead.
The Mason senior captain added a takedown in the third on the way to the 11-4 victory to advance to the Round of 8.
In the Consolation Round of 8 #1, Voss dropped a 13-5 major decision to Michigan freshman Mason Parris, who was seeded No. 5 entering the NCAA Championships.
Voss finished the season with a 32-8 record, setting a career-high for victories. He finished his Mason career with a record of 107-56, including three wins at the NCAA Championships.
At 149 pounds, Anthony fell to Penn State freshman Brady Berge by 6-2 decision in the Consolation Round of 16 #2.
Berge, seeded No. 12, scored with a takedown in the first period and took a 2-0 lead into the second. Anthony scored two escape points in the third, but Berge registered a takedown and added a riding time point for the decision.
Anthony, a Mason senior captain, finished the season with a 31-11 record, setting a new career-high for wins. He finished his Mason career with a record of 94-57, including two wins at the NCAA Championships.
Mason finished the 2018-19 season with an overall record of 9-7, including a mark of 3-3 against Eastern Wrestling League opponents. The Patriots completed their best season in 11 years, recording a winning dual record for the first time since the 2007-08 season.
The Patriots posted wins over VMI (20-17), Bloomsburg (24-11), Gardner-Webb (30-13), Davidson (34-6), Cleveland State (26-9), The Citadel (31-18), Edinboro (20-19), Franklin & Marshall (36-10) and Hofstra (28-9).
