Tejon Anthony and
Matthew Voss each won their second match of the day to advance to day two of the 2019 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, Pa.
Both Anthony and Voss advanced to the second day of competition at the NCAA Championships for the second straight year.
In his first bout of the day, Anthony, seeded 27th, faced North Carolina freshman Austin O'Connor, who was seeded No. 6, in the first round.
After a scoreless first period, O'Connor jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second, scoring with an escape and then a takedown with less than 10 seconds left in the period. Anthony scored with an escape in the third, but O'Connor held on for the 3-1 decision.
Following the rough first-round loss, Anthony took care of business in the Consolation Round of 16 #1 against South Dakota State junior Henry Pohlmeyer.
After a defensive first period, Anthony took a 2-0 lead when he was awarded a point for stalling and another for a technical violation by Pohlmeyer in the second period.
With the score 2-1 late in the third period, Anthony was awarded another point for a technical violation for the 3-1 decision.
In the Consolation Round of 16 #2, Anthony will take on Penn State freshman Brady Berge, who began the championships as the No. 12 seed at 149 pounds.
Berge defeated No. 21 Khristian Olivas (Fresno State) by 6-3 decision in the Round of 32, then dropped an 8-5 decision to No. 5 Matthew Kolodzik (Princeton) in the Round of 16.
At 285 pounds, Voss dropped a 3-1 decision in his Round of 32 match to Missouri freshman Zach Elam.
After a scoreless first period, Voss took the lead with an escape late in the second. With time winding down in the final frame, Elam tied the match with an escape with nine seconds remaining in the bout to force sudden victory. Elam scored with a takedown 38 seconds into sudden victory to pick up the 3-1 decision.
Voss responded with a 7-3 decision over Southern Illinois freshman Colton McKiernan in the Consolation Round of 16 #1. Voss recorded a pair of takedowns to build a 4-1 lead after one period. He added an escape point and his third takedown of the bout in the third period in the win.
Voss will face Wyoming sophomore Brian Andrews, who was seeded No. 19 at the start of the tournament. Andrews downed No. 14 A.J. Nevills (Fresno State) by 9-2 decision in the Round of 32, then Andrews dropped a 21-8 major decision to No. 3 Gable Stevenson (Minnesota) in the Round of 16.
At 165 pounds, Mason redshirt junior
Colston DiBlasi dropped a 14-4 major decision to Arizona State junior Joshua Shields in the first round.
The Patriots will continue action on Friday morning with Session III scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, Pa.
