BALTIMORE, Md. – The George Mason baseball team fell to UMBC, 9-3, on Wednesday afternoon at Alumni Field in Baltimore, Md.
Mason (10-9) fell behind when UMBC (5-11) built a 4-0 lead on five hits, two doubles and three singles, in the bottom of the second against freshman starter
Patrick Halligan.
Retrievers senior outfielder Terrence Pinkston, who had three hits on the day, had the big hit in the inning with a two-run double to right field.
UMBC added two runs on two singles and a double with two outs in the bottom of the third to increase the lead to 6-0.
With two outs in the top of the fourth, Mason junior catcher
Bailey Klein put the Patriots on the board with a solo home run to right field off UMBC starter Reid Celata to make the score 6-1.
In the top of the fifth, Mason sophomore outfielder
Scott Morgan belted his second career home run, a two-run blast with two outs to cut the Retrievers advantage to 6-3, but that would be as close as the Patriots would get.
UMBC added a run in the fifth and then tacked on two more in the sixth against Mason sophomore reliever
James Price to increase the lead to 9-3.
Halligan (1-2) allowed six runs on nine hits in 3.0 innings and took the loss. Price surrendered three runs on five hits over 3.0 innings.

Jonathan Ostroff each pitched one scoreless inning for the Patriots.
Celata (1-0) gave up three runs on seven hits with four strikeouts in 5.0 innings and earned his first collegiate win. UMBC relievers Andy Rozylowicz and Greg Albert combined to allow just one hit over four scoreless innings.
Klein went 2-for-4 with two RBI and hit his fifth career home run, while freshman outfielder
Jack Fitzgerald was 2-for-4 with two singles.
The Retrievers collected 16 hits in the game, while Mason had eight. Eight different players had at least one hit in the game for UMBC.
Mason has a record of 10-9, while UMBC moved to 5-9 on the season.
The Patriots begin Atlantic 10 play with a three-game series against Saint Joseph's this weekend. Game one of the series is Friday with the first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m. at Smithson Field in Philadelphia, Pa.
