FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason baseball team defeated Georgetown, 7-4, with freshman starter
Nate Young earning his first collegiate win on Tuesday afternoon at Spuhler Field.
Mason (10-8) took the lead in the bottom of the first against Georgetown (6-15) starter Jack Cushing.
Sophomore outfielder
Cam Reckling reached on a passed ball and junior third baseman
Logan Driscoll followed with a two-run home run to center, putting the Patriots in front 2-0.
In the home half of the third, Reckling led off with a double, junior catcher
Bailey Klein was hit by a pitch and senior first baseman
Tim Quinn walked to load the bases.
Senior designated hitter
Ryan Tassone knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly for the second straight game to extend the lead to 3-0.
Georgetown got on the board in the top of the fourth.
After the Hoyas loaded the bases with a walk and two singles, Georgetown junior first baseman Will Salomon drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to make the score 3-1.
The Hoyas made it a one-run game in the top of the fifth. Graduate student outfielder Kyle Ruedisili led off with a triple to left-center and scored on a sacrifice fly to cut the Mason lead to 3-2.
In the bottom of the seventh, Mason senior shortstop
Alejandro Aponte and Reckling both singled and Driscoll was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Aponte raced home on a groundout by Klein and Reckling scored on a wild pitch to increase the Patriots advantage to 5-2.
Mason scored two more insurance runs in the eighth, with freshman second baseman
Jared Lyons and Driscoll each driving in a run with a RBI-single to make it a 7-2 game.
In the top of the ninth, Hoyas sophomore Kai Nelson and classmate Ryan P. Davis hit back-to-back pinch-hit home runs off of Mason freshman reliever
Hugh O'Hara to cut the Patriots lead to 7-4.
With two outs, the Hoyas put runners on first and second with a single and hit-by-pitch to bring the tying run to the plate.
After a call to the bullpen, Mason freshman
Stuart Barrett picked up his first career save, with Georgetown sophomore third baseman Eddie McCabe lining to short for the final out of the game.
In his first career start, Young (1-0) allowed one run on three hits with six strikeouts and three walks in 3.2 innings to earn his first NCAA victory.
Mason sophomore
Michael Yuille gave up one run on two hits with two strikeouts and a walk in 3.1 innings, while O'Hara surrendered two runs on three hits and struck out one batter in 1.2 innings of work.
Cushing (1-2) gave up three runs, two earned, on six hits with eight strikeouts and one walk in 6.0 innings and took the loss.
Hoyas freshman Angelo Tonas pitched the seventh and surrendered two runs on three hits, while classmate Jack Weeks pitched the eighth and allowed two runs on four hits.
Driscoll went 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBI, while Reckling finished 3-for-5 and scored three runs. Both players extended their hitting streaks to five games.
Aponte was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. He has a seven-game hitting streak, including four multi-hit games. Morgan and Quinn each went 2-for-3 in the game for the Patriots.
The Patriots are back on the road Wednesday against UMBC with the first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m. at Alumni Field in Baltimore, Md.
