FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason baseball team dropped the final game of its series to Monmouth, 7-3, on Sunday afternoon at Spuhler Field in Fairfax, Va.
Mason (9-8) fell behind in the top of the third inning when Monmouth (5-11) scored three runs against Patriots senior starter
Brian Marconi.
Monmouth junior shortstop Danny Long put the Hawks on the board with a leadoff home run. After a walk and a stolen base, junior catcher Zach Schild knocked in a run with a single and senior outfielder J.D. Andreessen plated another with a double to make the score 3-0.
Mason scored single runs in the fifth and sixth against Monmouth senior starter James Kelly.

Ryan Tassone drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 3-1.
In the home half of the sixth, sophomore outfielder
Scott Morgan drew a one-out walk and later scored when Reckling singled to right with two outs to make the score 3-2.
Monmouth broke the game open with two runs in both the seventh and ninth innings.
Hawks junior outfielder J.P. Walsh hit his first home run of the season, a two-run homer in the seventh off Mason junior
James Beasley to increase the lead to 5-2. Schild added a two-out RBI single in the ninth, while Walsh also scored to extend the advantage to 7-2.

Aaron Yurko knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth to make the final score 7-3.
The Patriots had won eight straight three-game series played at Spuhler Field. The Patriots last dropped a series at home May 18-20, 2017 against Saint Louis.
Marconi (1-2) allowed three runs on three hits with three strikeouts and four walks in six innings and took the loss. Beasley gave up two runs on two hits and struck out two over two innings, while freshman
Jared Lyons surrendered two runs on three hits in one inning of work.
Kelly allowed two runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and four walks in 5.2 innings to earn the win. Hawks sophomore Ryan Steckline picked up his first save, allowing one run on four hits with a season-high six strikeouts in 3.1 innings.
Reckling went 3-for-5 with a RBI and run scored, Quinn was 2-for-4 and senior shortstop
Alejandro Aponte finished 3-for-4 with two singles and a double.
Each team had 11 hits in the game. The Patriots had at least one hit and left at least one baserunner on in every inning.
Mason left 13 runners on base, while Monmouth stranded five.
The Patriots are back on the diamond on Tuesday when they host Georgetown with the first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m. at Spuhler Field.
