HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The George Mason University men's tennis team completed its annual PTR Springfest trip to South Carolina with victories over Georgetown (Ky.) and Earlham.

The Patriots defeated the Tigers 5-2, then won 4-0 over Earlham in the second half of the doubleheader.

Georgetown (Ky.)
Against Georgetown, Mason continued its strong doubles play, sweeping the point behind a trio of good performances. At No. 3, Luke Maxwell and Erick Rivas picked up a 7-5 win to wrap up the point.

On the singles front, Mason went up 2-0 after Maxwell picked up a singles win. The Arlington native won in straight sets (6-1, 6-0) over Eddie Lam. At No. 2, junior Jakob Nielsen made it 3-0 Patriots with a two-set victory over Cole McCreary (6-2, 6-0).

After Georgetown picked up a point at No. 4, Mason clinched the match with a win from senior Pally Ray at No. 3. He upended Piunti, 6-2, 6-3. Junior Edward Ayers grabbed Mason's fifth point at No. 1, taking down Ryo Takeda in a two-setter (6-3, 6-3).

"This was a good team win," head coach Jimmy Davis said. "We're continuing to make improvements and see how competitive we can be in a tough environment. The guys are starting to find their A-games as a group so we're excited to step up to the challenge."

Earlham
In the second half of the doubleheader, Mason won the first four matches to pick up the shortened victory.

Again at doubles, Mason picked up a clean sweep in the three matches. Ayers and Nielsen took over the top spot and won 6-3 in their opener. Then, Ray and freshman Chanasorn Nakaurai defeated Jason Lawson/Adarsh Singh at No. 2, 6-2. Maxwell and Rivas wrapped up the point with a 6-0 win at No. 3.

In singles, Ray won at No. 2 singles over Alexsandr Sergeev (6-2, 6-3). Rivas stepped up to No. 3 and cruised in his match (6-1, 6-3), while Nakaurai picked up a singles win at No. 4 over Nicola Manni (6-1, 6-3).

"The guys battled hard today in a tough back-to-back matchup and we played some great tennis," Davis said. "Our freshmen stepped up and competed at a really high level. They two wins should give us plenty of confidence going in to our conference match at Davidson. We're making improvements match to match and we're excited to step up to the challenging schedule coming up."

Mason battles the Wildcats in its first A-10 match on Sunday (March 17) in greater Charlotte. First serve is scheduled for 11 a.m.
