RALEIGH, N.C. – The George Mason baseball team fell to No. 20 N.C. State, 18-3, on Wednesday at Doak Field at Dail Park in Raleigh, N.C.
Mason (8-6) took the lead against N.C. State (17-0, 3-0 ACC) junior starter Alec Barger in the top of the second inning.
Senior first baseman
Tim Quinn led off the inning with a solo home run over the right field fence to put the Patriots in front 1-0.
The Wolfpack answered in the home half of the second against Mason freshman starter
Patrick Halligan, scoring a pair of runs on two doubles and a walk to take a 2-1 lead.
In the top of the third, Mason sophomore
Cam Reckling led off with a single and with one out, senior left fielder
Bailey Klein doubled to put runners on second and third.
Senior third baseman
Greg Popatak II followed with a ground out, with Reckling crossing the plate to tie the score, 2-2.
The Wolfpack sent 10 batters to the plate and scored six runs on five hits and three walks to take the lead for good at 8-2.
N.C. State freshman center fielder Tyler McDonough had the big hit in the inning with a two-run homer, while junior shortstop Will Wilson drove in two runs with a single.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Wolfpack sent 14 batters to the plate and scored 10 runs on six hits against three Mason pitchers to make it an 18-2 game.
In the ninth, Quinn and Mason sophomore second baseman
Daniel Brooks singled to put runners on the corners with two outs. Quinn scored on a fielding error to make the final 18-3.
The Wolfpack have the most wins in Division I and are one of two undefeated teams in the nation, along with Arizona State.
Halligan (1-1) allowed four runs on four hits with two strikeouts and three walks in 2.1 innings and took the loss.
Freshman
Nate Young gave up four runs, three earned, on two hits with one strikeout and two walks in 0.2 innings. Sophomore
Austin Cabone surrendered six runs, five earned, on two hits with two strikeouts and four walks in 2.1 innings. Freshman
Mason Posey allowed four unearned runs in 0.1 inning of work.
Freshman
Hugh O'Hara tossed 2.1 scoreless innings in his collegiate debut. He struck out two and walked two.
Barger allowed two runs on five hits in 2.0 innings in the start for the Wolfpack in a no-decision. N.C State freshman Cameron Cotter (1-0) allowed one hit over three innings and earned the win.
Quinn went 2-for-4 with a home run and two runs scored, Reckling was 2-for-5 and scored a run and Klein finished 2-for-3.
The Patriots are back on the diamond on Friday, hosting Monmouth in the first of a three-game series, with the first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m. at Spuhler Field.
