BURKE, Va. – The George Mason University women's tennis team won five of six singles matches to win its spring opener vs. Mary Washington on Saturday.
The victory improved the Patriots to 4-1 in dual matches this season, as Mason also won three out of four duals at Morgan State in the fall.
"Overall we played well, despite a somewhat slow start," head coach Steve Curtis said. "As our first match of the spring it showed us where we still need work."
Mason's singles superiority included a dominant performance by No. 1
Sydney Green, who dispatched of Danielle Mirabella by a score of eight games to two. Green is 3-0 at the top spot for the Patriots so far this season.
At No. 3, sophomore
Hannah Yang battled Lauren Quinn and went the distance. With the match tied at eight games a piece, Yang won her tiebreaker to claim another point for the Green & Gold.
Elsewhere, sophomore
Kayleigh Hahn easily dispatched of Sophie Dixon, 8-1, at the No. 4 position, while freshman
Jackie Nannery took care of business at No. 5 (8-3) against Rachel Cooper. Nannery is 2-0 in two career dual matches for Mason.
At No. 6, fellow freshman
Marium Raza won 8-2 over Emily Bowerman. Raza also picked up a win at No. 3 doubles alongside Nannery by the score of 8-4.
After Saturday, Mason will host Christopher Newport and Washington & Lee at the James River Country Club on Feb. 15.
