ROCK HILL, S.C. – The George Mason baseball team was swept in a doubleheader at Winthrop on Sunday, falling 3-1 in game one and 7-0 in the second game at Winthrop Ballpark in Rock Hill, S.C.
In the first game, Mason (3-2) took the early lead over Winthrop (3-3) with a single run in the second inning against Eagles junior starter Zach Peek.
Mason senior third baseman
Greg Popatak II led off the second inning with a double to right field. With one out, senior first baseman
Tim Quinn singled to put runners on first and third.
Sophomore
Scott Morgan then drove in a run with a ground out, with Popatak crossing the plate to put the Patriots up 1-0.
The Eagles scored all three of their runs in the fourth inning against Mason starter
Jared DiCesare.
Senior Matt Mulkey singled and scored on a one-out triple by junior Spencer Yandle to tie the score, 1-1.
Senior Hunter Lipscomb then hit a two-run home run over the right field fence to give Winthrop a 3-1 lead.
The Winthrop bullpen turned in three scoreless innings. Mason had just one hit over the final seven innings against four Winthrop pitchers.
DiCesare (1-1) allowed three runs on eight hits with three strikeouts and one walk over six innings and took the loss.
Junior
James Beasley retired all six batters he faced over the final two innings for the Patriots.
Peek (1-0) surrendered just one run on two hits with 10 strikeouts and two walks to earn the win for the Eagles. Sophomore Mason Groves recorded the final two outs to pick up the save.
Sophomore
Daniel Brooks went 1-for-3, while Popatak finished 1-for-4. Quinn reached base three times, going 1-for-2 with a walk and was hit by a pitch.
The Patriots had just three hits and three runners in scoring position in the game.
In game two, Winthrop scored single runs in each of the first two innings against Mason starter
Brian Marconi to jump out to a 2-0 lead.
Mulkey hit a solo home run in the bottom of the first and freshman Matt Levenson drove in a run with a RBI single in the home half of the second.
The Eagles plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth and three more in the eighth against two Mason relievers for the 7-0 final.
Marconi (1-1) allowed four runs on five hits with four strikeouts and two walks in 5.1 innings in the loss.
Freshman
Stuart Barrett pitched 1.2 scoreless innings, while classmate
Jared Lyons gave up two runs on one hit in 0.1 inning and
Mason Posey allowed a run on two hits in 0.2 innings of work.
Winthrop senior starter Nate Pawelczyk (2-0) tossed seven scoreless innings with eight strikeouts and two walks in the win. Winthrop freshman Tyler Jones and junior Thad Harris each tossed one scoreless inning in relief.
Mason was held to six hits.
Quinn went 2-for-4 in the game, while senior outfielder
Brady Acker and junior catcher
Logan Driscoll each finished 1-for-4.

Alejandro Aponte and sophomore designated hitter
Aaron Yurko were 1-for-3.
The Patriots are back on the road for their first midweek game of the season, facing Longwood on Tuesday, Feb. 26, with the first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m. at Buddy Bolding Stadium in Farmville, Va.
