Mason Falls at Home Against Maryland on Senior Day

FAIRFAX, Va. - The George Mason University wrestling team fell to the University of Maryland, 26-12, on Sunday at the Recreation and Athletic Complex (RAC) in Fairfax, Va.

Mason (8-7, 3-3 EWL) fell behind early after Maryland (1-11, 0-8) came out victorious on the first four bouts of the match.

At 149 pounds, Mason redshirt senior Tejon Anthony (26-8, 11-3) started the match at a stalemate with fellow redshirt senior counterpart Alfred Bannister of Maryland. Late in the first period, Bannister was able to record a takedown to earn a two-point advantage. Despite the lead, Anthony was able to record a takedown of his own. The bout ultimately went to overtime where the two battled until the very last whistle. Bannister was able to finish by taking down Anthony and won the bout 5-3. The win by Bannister gave Maryland an early 17-0 lead.

The Patriots recorded their first victory of the day at 157 pounds. Freshman, Kolby Ho won by decision against redshirt senior Ryan Diehl by a score of 5-3. The victorious bout put the Patriots on the board, 17-3.

Mason went on to win the next match at 165 pounds, shrinking the Terrapin lead, 17-7.

That match included redshirt junior, Colston DiBlasi, who dominated the bout. DiBlasi earned three takedowns and went on to win the bout by major decision, 9-0.

The Terrapins later won the following two bouts, improving their lead, 23-7.

At 197 pounds, redshirt sophomore Eli Spencer recorded seven takedowns, along with one escape, to end a perfect match as he defeated his opponent by major decision, 15-0. Bringing the Patriots within nine, 23-12.

Maryland went on to win the heavyweight bout at 285 pounds, winning the day 26-12.

Prior to the match, the Patriots honored their two senior captains for senior day. Tejon Anthony and Matthew Voss were both recognized in their final home match for the Patriots.

The Patriots are back on the road, as they battle against Hofstra University on Friday, Feb. 22 at 7 p.m. in Hempstead, N.Y.
