NEWPORT NEWS/CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The George Mason University women's tennis team won two of three matches during a successful weekend road trip throughout the Commonwealth.
Mason opened the weekend in Newport News, where the Patriots earned victories over Christopher Newport (6-1) and Washington & Lee. The Patriots then battled No. 18 Virginia hard on Saturday before falling to the host Cavaliers 4-0 in Charlottesville.
Highlights from the weekend included a 2-0 doubles record for the tandem of freshmen
Hannah Harrod and
Jackie Nannery, as well as a 2-1 mark from the No. 1 duo of
Sydney Green and
Brianna Gibbs. In singles, freshman
Marium Raza picked up two victories at No. 6, while Green and Gibbs won matches at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions, respectively.

In the opener against Christopher Newport, Mason won all three doubles matches, including victories for Gibbs/Green at No. 1 (8-7), Harrod/freshman
Jackie Nannery at No. 2 (8-6) and the duo of sophomore
Hannah Yang and junior
Rachel Lee at No. 3 (8-3).
In singles, Green won a three-setter at No. 1 over Johanna Ranta-Aho (6-2, 4-6, 10-6), while Harrod easily dispatched of Amanda Yermal (6-0, 6-1) at No. 3. Nannery dropped her first set at No. 5 (1-6), but rallied to win the next two (7-5, 10-7) to take her match. Raza cruised in straight sets at No. 6 (6-0, 6-1).
Washington & Lee
Against Washington & Lee, the match was tighter and required some strong play under pressure for the young Patriots.
The Patriots took an early 1-0 lead after clinching the doubles point. Green & Gibbs won easily (8-2), while Harrod and Nannery took down W&L's combo of Lily Horsley and Valerie Marshall, 8-5.
In singles, the Generals took matches at No. 4 and No. 3 to move in front, 2-1. Then, W&L increased the lead to 3-1 after a win at No. 1.
But from there, Mason mounted a comeback with its back against the wall. Gibbs moved Mason within one (3-2) with a win at No. 2. She dispatched of Valerie Marshall in straights sets (7-5, 6-1). Then, Raza won her second match of the weekend to draw Mason even. She took the first set, 6-1, at No. 6, then won her second 6-4 to claim victory.
It all came down to sophomore
Christine McCarthy, who put forth a resilient effort. After winning the first set (7-5), she dropped her second, 1-6. Then in the third-set tiebreaker, McCarthy fended off a pair of match points to ultimately take it 11-9 and clinch the victory for the Green & Gold.
No. 18 Virginia
Against the nationally-ranked Cavaliers, the Patriots played hard and put together some competitive results. Nannery and Harrod took two games off their foes at No. 2 doubles before the match wrapped up unfinished, while Green battled the No. 45 singles player in the nation (Meghan Kelley) and found success with a trio of game victories. Nannery also took a trio of games at No. 5 singles for the Green & Gold.
Mason returns to action next Sunday (Feb. 24) with a match at Navy.
