WASHINGTON, D.C. – The George Mason wrestling team fell to American, 29-15, on Friday evening at Bender Arena in Washington, D.C.
Mason (8-6, 3-3 EWL) fell behind when American (6-4, 4-2 EIWA) won the first bout of the evening by fall at 141 pounds.
At 149 pounds, Mason redshirt senior
Tejon Anthony (26-8, 11-3) led 2-0 after the first period and 6-0 going into the third against American senior Michael Sprague.
Anthony went on to a 7-1 decision to cut the Eagles match-score lead to 6-3.
American increased the advantage to 12-3 with another first-period fall at 157 pounds.
Mason redshirt junior
Colston DiBlasi (25-9, 9-2) responded with a pin at 2:20 of the first period against Eagles sophomore Anthony Wokasch.
At 174 pounds, Mason redshirt freshman
Cornelius Schuster trailed American sophomore Connor Allhouse 2-0 going into the third period. Schuster scored with an escape early in the third but dropped a hard-fought 2-1 decision.
American registered a 23-7 technical fall at 184 pounds to increase the lead to 20-9.
Mason redshirt sophomore
Eli Spencer (22-11, 4-5) pulled Mason closer when he notched a 6-1 decision over sophomore Abraham Correa-Medina at 197 pounds.
After a scoreless first period, Spencer built a 4-0 advantage going into the third on the way to the victory.
In the heavyweight matchup, Mason redshirt senior
Matthew Voss (27-4, 12-1) and American freshman Niko Camacho were scoreless after the first two periods.
Voss scored an early escape in the third and added two takedowns for his team-leading 27th win of the season to cut the Eagles advantage to 20-15.
American picked up a 17-12 decision at 125 pounds to put the match out of reach at 23-15 and then won by fall at 133 pounds in the last bout of the night for the 29-15 victory over the Patriots.
The Patriots host Maryland on Senior Day on Sunday, Feb. 17 at noon at the Recreation Athletic Complex.
