FAIRFAX STATION, Va. – The 2019-20 George Mason University rowing team hit the competitive waters for the first time this season on Sunday and manufactured solid performances across the board during a strong debut for the Patriots.
All of Mason's 8+ and 4+ boats enjoyed top-3 finishes while the Patriots also gained experience in less common racing formats like pairs and singles racing.
Throughout the fall, Mason will tinker with lineups and try to find max speed with combinations up and down the roster. That process in competitive racing began Sunday on the waters of the Occoquan.
"I think it was a pretty successful day," head coach
Joseph Richards said. "We raced a bunch of mixed lineups, spread our student-athletes throughout a few boats and a lot of individuals had multiple racing opportunities."
Mason's two eight boats finished second and third respectively in that format, with the Patriots' top boat (17:03.52), coxswained by
Paige Hansbury, placing less than five seconds behind the No. 1 finisher. Mason's second boat in the race, coxswained by
Kate Lackatos, crossed the finish line in 17:15.51.
In the four, the Patriots placed second in a time of 19:01.55. That boat gained valuable experience for the two freshmen in its ranks –
Emily Donohue and
Tara Franke.
"Every crew I talked to came off the water feeling like they had a quality piece," Richards said. "They were lineups we hadn't practiced with, so I think it speaks to the work that we're doing and the quality and depth of our program that we were able to get together in mixed lineups and put together a good effort. The results were solid and I was happy that our team felt that they put together good rows."
Mason put four pairs on the water in a fun exhibition for the eight participants.
Maria Justiniano and
Bailey Price won the race in 19:13.06, while
Grace Moody and
Nida Peleda placed second (19:34.67). Next up were
Caroline Larson and
Xander Huffman (19:56.58), followed by
Elizabeth Johnson and
Emma Puckett (20:59.80).
Puckett also raced in the single format to begin the day Sunday morning and crossed the finish line in 21:59.63.
"I was happy to be able to get some of our athletes out in small boats as well," Richards said. "That type of racing is an important growth opportunity for those athletes and a fun inter-squad race."
Mason returns to action on Saturday (Oct. 12) at the annual Navy Day Regatta in Philadelphia.
