FAIRFAX, Va. – George Mason University senior
Edward Ayers will etch his name into the Patriot record books this weekend when he becomes the first player in program annals to compete at the ITA All-American Championship.
The event, which in effect serves as an All-Star showcase for collegiate tennis and brings together the nation's top players, will be held beginning Saturday (Oct. 5) and run through October 13 in Tulsa, Okla. Ayers begins in pre-qualifying on Saturday and with a victory, would move on to two matches in the qualifying round. The full main draw begins on Oct. 9.
He will open competition against Ryan Dickerson of Baylor University at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.
"We're excited that Eddie has the opportunity to compete in such a prestigious tournament," head coach Jimmy Davis said. "Eddie is one of the most decorated players in program history, and myself and the team couldn't be happier that he has earned this opportunity. He will be the first player in Mason history to compete in the All-American tournament, and we know he will be a great representative of George Mason Athletics just as he has been for the last three years on and off the court. We're excited for the opportunity and looking forward to the challenge."
Ayers will compete against talent from some of the best programs in the country, including a number of players from the University of Virginia, Duke, Ohio State and more in the pre-qualifying round.
Ayers, a 2019 All-Atlantic 10 First Team selection, posted an impressive 10-6 dual record while leading Mason at the No. 1 singles position last season. He notched three Atlantic 10 victories, including wins over A-10 Player of the Year Jordan Benjamin (Dayton) and First Team All-A-10 selection Nathan Perrone (Saint Joseph's). Benjamin had not lost an A-10 match in three seasons prior to his matchup with Ayers. He also posted nine dual doubles victories in 2019-20.
