Yinzer Cup Information

FAIRFAX, Va. –
The George Mason University rowing team will race on one of Pittsburgh's three rivers on Saturday, when the Patriots compete in the first ever Yinzer Cup in the Steel City.

Hosted by Robert Morris University, the event also will include Canisius, West Virginia and Marietta. The regatta will be held near McPhail Boathouse at RMU Island Sports Center, with the racing held on the Ohio River.

"We're excited to be racing in the first year of the Yinzer Cup," head coach Joe Richards said. "It will be a good chance to see what kind of progress we've been able to make since Navy Day and to test ourselves against some other quality crews."

Mason will send three boats to Western Pennsylvania, led by the Varsity 8+, which will compete at 12:40 p.m. Last weekend at the Navy Day Regatta, the Varsity 8+ completed its competition in a time of 14:28.84 to place 14th out of 29 boats. That moved them ahead of crews from Navy, Temple, Lehigh, Delaware and Saint Joseph's. What's more, the Patriots were just two seconds behind Villanova, which placed 13th.

The Patriots also will race a Second Varsity 8+ this Saturday at noon, while the program's Varsity 4+ will compete at 10:40 a.m.

The Yinzer Cup marks Mason's penultimate race of the fall. The Green & Gold will wrap up the first half of the 2019-20 campaign on Nov. 2 at the Head of the Occoquan at Sandy Run Regional Park.
