FAIRFAX, Va. –
The George Mason University men's tennis team will stack itself up against some of the top talent in the region this week when the Patriots take part in the annual ITA Regional, held this year in Charlottesville on the University of Virginia's campus.

The event begins Thursday (Oct. 17) and runs through Tuesday (Oct. 22). Mason will send eight student-athletes to compete in singles, while a pair of Patriot tandems will suit up for doubles action, which begins Friday (Oct. 18).

Senior Edward Ayers will anchor the Patriots in singles. He is one of the top-32 seeds in the draw, which means he will receive two byes and begin competition in the round of 64. Ayers has a strong history in the event. Last season, he picked up a victory in singles and also partnered with Jakob Nielsen to take down the No. 15 seed doubles tandem of Penn State's Alp Sentay and Christos Antonopoulos. They then defeated a Duquesne pair in the Round of 32 to reach the Sweet 16 of the event.

As a sophomore, Ayers made it to the Round of 32 in singles, highlighted by a triumph over No. 15 seed Matthew Lord of Virginia, who was ranked that summer as the No. 6 incoming freshman in the nation.

Nielsen, in addition to his doubles prowess with Ayers in 2018, also grabbed a singles victory in the event last season. This year, Nielsen matches up in the first round with Andrew Rozanov of Georgetown. He also is part of a doubles team with freshman Faisal Alrebdi. That duo will match up with a pair of Bernstines from Virginia Tech on Friday.

Alrebdi also will compete in singles for the Patriots and open his competition with Stefan Petrovic of James Madison.

Elsewhere, junior Ryan Charles will battle Mark Amaefule of Morgan State, while freshman Rithik Sardana will take on Navy's Greg Durham. In addition, Charles and Sardana will team up in doubles to face the Molina/Valdoleiros team from Delaware on Friday.

Also in singles, freshman Momin Khan begins play against Radford's Rodrigo Magalhaes and sophomore Erick Rivas will do battle with Liberty's Chase Burton. Sophomore Chanasorn Nakaurai opens competition against Mt. St. Mary's Jean Armstrong Thursday.
