FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason University rowing team will look to carry momentum from last weekend's season opening race into this Saturday's competition, when the Green & Gold travel to Philadelphia for the annual Navy Day Regatta on the waters of the Schuylkill River.
The Patriots will race a trio of boats in Philly, with hopes of continuing to find strong boat dynamics, maximize efficiency and improve times during the exploratory fall season.
This weekend, that will mean competing against a series of some of the strongest rowing programs in the region.
"The field at the regatta is deep and fast and I'm looking forward to seeing how we stack up within it," head coach
Joseph Richards said. "We've had a good week of practice this week and a productive fall so far so I'm expecting all of our crews to perform well."
Mason will race a trio of boats this weekend, including a Women's Collegiate 4+, which will lead off the day for the Green & Gold at 10:04 a.m.
The Patriots' Collegiate JV8+ boat will hit the water at 11:04 a.m., while Mason's Collegiate 8+ wraps up the day at 1:08 p.m.
The Green & Gold will compete against Penn, Georgetown, St. Joseph's, Delaware, Temple and a host of other strong programs on Saturday.
Mason is coming off last weekend's Occoquan Challenge, in which all of the Patriots' 8+ and 4+ boats enjoyed top-3 finishes while student-athletes also gained experience in less common racing formats like pairs and singles racing.
After this weekend's race in Philly, Mason will travel to western Pennsylvania to take part in the Yinzer Cup on Oct. 19 in Pittsburgh.
