Matthew Voss, who placed fourth at the Southern Scuffle, has been named Eastern Wrestling League Wrestler of the Week for the week ending Jan. 6, the league announced on Monday.
Voss, from Edgewood, Wash., won his first three matches at heavyweight at the Southern Scuffle Jan. 1-2 at McKenzie Arena in Chattanooga, Tenn.
The senior captain recorded a 7-2 decision over Thomas Ott (Navy), picked up a 6-0 decision against Connor Tolley (Chattanooga) and then won in a tiebreaker against No. 8 Billy Miller (Virginia Tech) to advance to the semifinals.
After dropping a 14-6 major decision to No. 3 Anthony Cassar (Penn State) in the semifinal matchup, Voss responded by beating No. 20 Joey Goodhart (Drexel) by 13-6 decision in the consolation semifinals.
In the third-place match, Voss fell to two-time All-American Nick Nevills (Penn State) by a 2-1 decision.
Voss, who also earned EWL Wrestler of the Week honors Nov. 4, improved to 20-4 on the season. He is ranked #9 by TheOpenMat, #13 by FloWrestling, #16 by Intermat and #21 by TrackWrestling.
The Patriots are back in action Thursday, Jan. 10 when they host EWL rival Cleveland State at 5:30 p.m. and Columbia at 7 p.m. at the Recreation Athletic Complex in Fairfax.
