FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason wrestling team fell to Rider, 30-6, in the final Eastern Wrestling League match of the season on Thursday at the Recreation Athletic Complex in Fairfax, Va.
Mason (7-5, 3-3 EWL) fell behind in the match when Rider (6-3, 3-0 EWL) picked up wins in the first three bouts of the evening.
The Broncs recorded a 15-9 decision at 125 pounds, a fall at 133 pounds and a 10-8 decision at 141 pounds to take a 12-0 match-score lead.
At 149 pounds, Mason redshirt senior
Tejon Anthony (24-8, 9-3) scored with two takedowns in the first period to build a 4-2 lead against Rider junior Gary Dinmore heading into the second period.
Anthony held a 4-3 advantage going into the final frame and he increased the lead with an escape point 15 seconds into the third. With under 30 seconds remaining, Anthony cemented the win with a takedown on the way to an 8-4 decision.
Anthony is second on the team with 24 wins and improved to 9-3 in duals this season, including a mark of 4-2 against EWL opponents.
In a defensive matchup, Mason freshman
Kolby Ho (17-9, 7-3) led Rider senior Geno Fluri 2-1 after the first period and 3-1 heading in to the third period at 157 pounds.
With the score tied 4-4 with under a minute remaining, Fluri scored with a takedown to make the score 6-4. Ho countered with an escape to make it 6-5, but Fluri held on for the decision.
Rider then earned a technical fall at 165 pounds to make the score 20-3.
At 174 pounds, Mason redshirt freshman
Cornelius Schuster (12-8, 6-5) and Rider freshman George Walton were tied 1-1 in the third.
Walton scored four near-fall points and a takedown in the third to pick up a 7-2 decision to increase the Broncs match-score advantage to 23-3.
Rider added a 14-6 major decision at 184 pounds and a 3-1 decision at 197 pounds to increase the lead to 30-3.
In the final bout of the evening, Mason redshirt senior
Matthew Voss (26-4, 11-1) and Rider senior Ryan Cloud were scoreless after the first period.
Voss took a 1-0 lead in the match when Cloud was called for stalling in the final seconds of the second period.
Voss increased the lead to 4-0 in the third with an escape and a takedown and posted a 5-0 decision for his team-leading 26th win.
Voss finished conference competition with a perfect 6-0 record against EWL opponents this season.
The Patriots are back in action when they face Franklin & Marshall on Saturday, Feb. 9 in Lancaster, Pa.
