Patriots Clash With Clarion on Thursday

FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason wrestling team is on the road to face Eastern Wrestling League rival, Clarion on Thursday, with the match scheduled for 7 p.m. at Marwick-Boyd Auditorium in Clarion, Pa.
 
Mason (6-3, 2-1 EWL) has won four of its last five duals overall and has posted a 4-1 record on the road this season.
 
The Patriots have won road duals over VMI, Bloomsburg, Gardner-Webb and Davidson.
 
Last time out, the Patriots wrapped up a three-match homestand with a 31-18 victory over The Citadel on Sunday, Jan. 13 at the Recreation Athletic Complex.
 
Mason freshman Julio Alegria recorded his first collegiate pin and first NCAA dual victory at 141 pounds, while redshirt junior Colston DiBlasi (22-8, 6-1) notched his NCAA-leading 14th pin of the season at 165 pounds.
 
Redshirt freshman Cornelius Schuster (12-5, 6-2) has won each of his last four dual matches and eight of his last 10 bouts overall.
 
Redshirt senior Matthew Voss (23-4, 8-1) leads the team with 23 victories at 285 pounds, while classmate Tejon Anthony (22-7, 7-2) is tied for second on the squad in wins competing at 149 pounds.
 
Voss has earned bonus points in 10 of his wins this season.  He is ranked #10 by WIN Magazine, #11 by TheOpenMat, #13 by FloWrestling and #15 by InterMat.
 
Last season, Clarion won all 10 bouts and defeated Mason, 48-0, on Jan. 21, 2018 at the Recreation Athletic Complex.

SCOUTING CLARION
 
Clarion has an overall dual record of 4-4, including a 1-0 mark against EWL opponents.  The Golden Eagles are 3-1 at home, 0-2 on the road and 1-1 in matches held at a neutral site.
 
Last time out, the Golden Eagles won their EWL opener with a 22-15 victory over Bloomsburg on Jan. 13 at Marwick-Boyd Auditorium.
 
Freshman Andrew Gapas (141), senior Evan Delong, sophomore Max Wohlabaugh (174), sophomore Greg Bulsak (197) and junior Toby Cahill (285) each earned wins in the match against the Huskies.
 
Clarion has also posted home victories against Gardner-Webb, 42-9 (Nov. 2) and LIU Post, 39-7 (Jan. 9).
 
Sophomore Shae Bloom (15-6, 2-1) leads the team in wins in and pins (6), while junior Jack Peura (14-6, 0-0) is second on the squad in victories.

MAT FACT
 
Clarion alum and Golden Eagles Hall of Famer Kurt Angle finished his collegiate career with 116 victories, 13th-most in Clarion program history.
 
Angle was a two-time All-American, won two NCAA titles and was world champion in 1995.  He won five matches to capture the gold medal at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, while competing with a broken neck.
 
Professional wrestling fans know Angle for his "three I's" – intensity, integrity and intelligence.
