Patriots Set for Sunday Showdown Against The Citadel

FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason wrestling team wraps up its homestand against The Citadel on Sunday, with the match scheduled for 12 p.m. at the Recreation Athletic Complex in Fairfax.

Mason (5-3, 2-1 EWL) split a pair of duals on Thursday, defeating Cleveland State, 26-19, before falling to Columbia, 24-21.

Redshirt senior Matthew Voss (22-4, 7-1) picked up two wins at heavyweight.  He won by 16-1 technical fall over Collin Kelly (Cleveland State) and notched a 3-2 decision over Daniel Herman (Columbia).

Voss, who began the week ranked #9 by TheOpenMat, #13 by FloWrestling, #16 By Intermat and #21 by TrackWrestling, has earned bonus points in nine of his victories this season.

At 149 pounds, redshirt senior Tejon Anthony (22-6, 7-1) registered a 19-4 technical fall against Brady Barnett (Cleveland State) and capped off his perfect day with a 6-2 decision over Riley Jacobs (Columbia).

Mason redshirt junior Colston DiBlasi (21-8, 5-1) also posted a pair of victories.  He recorded an 11-0 major decision at 165 pounds against John Vaughn (Cleveland State) and notched his 14th pin of the season, winning by fall over Laurence Kosoy (Columbia).

At 174 pounds, redshirt freshman Cornelius Schuster won by fall against Colton Carroll (Cleveland State) and registered a 4-2 decision over Max Elling (Columbia) in the second dual of the evening.

In last year's matchup against The Citadel, the Patriots won the season-opener with a 24-13 victory over the Bulldogs on Nov. 3, 2017 at McAlister Field House in Charleston, S.C.

The Patriots won six of 10 bouts in the match, with victories at 125, 133, 141, 157, 184 and 285 pounds.

Anthony turned in a 16-1 victory over Ethan Phillips at 141 pounds, while Voss posted a 4-2 decision against Michael McAleavey in the heavyweight bout.

SCOUTING THE CITADEL

The Citadel has competed in three duals and six tournaments this season.  The Bulldogs have a record of 0-3 on the year.

The Bulldogs have dropped duals to Edinboro (19-17), Sacred Heart (24-22) and Drexel (41-0).

Last time out, The Citadel had five wrestlers win two matches at the Southern Scuffle on Jan. 1-2 in Chattanooga, Tenn.

Senior Sawyer Root, juniors Rian Burris and Douglas Gudenburr, along with freshmen Chon Porter and Dazjon Casto each posted a pair of victories at the Southern Scuffle.

MAT FACT

The Patriots have a 5-1 all-time record against the Bulldogs.  Mason and The Citadel met for the first time during the 1982-83 season, with the Patriots claiming a 34-15 victory.
