The George Mason lacrosse team participated in the "Out of the Darkness Walk" in Fairfax today to raise awareness about the issue of suicide, which is the tenth leading cause of death in the U.S., according to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention website.
"Suicide affects a lot of people everywhere even in our community," said senior Elizabeth Benedetto. "Our team wanted to participate to show our support to our community that has supported us so well. It's a huge cause and something that is not taken lightly."
The 11th annual event started at Veteran's Amphitheater next to City Hall in Fairfax with information tables hosted by local businesses and non-profit organizations. This gave the community an opportunity to gather literature, hear about upcoming events, and connect with others who are dedicated to raising awareness of mental illness and suicide, strengthening prevention efforts, and providing support to those impacted by suicide loss or mental illness.
Elizabethany from HOT 99.5's Kane Show served as this year's emcee of the Out of the Darkness Walk pre-walk program.
Proceeds from the walks all across the country invests in new research, creates educational programs, advocate for public policy and support survivors of suicide loss. About 45,000 people die by suicide each year in the country and the foundation hopes to reduce the rate 20 percent by 2025 through walks in major cities.
