Tournament Central/Draw
FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason University women's tennis team will be making a weekend trip to the McClure Tennis Center at the Ridley Athletic Complex to take part in the Loyola Women's Tennis Invitational from Friday through Sunday in Baltimore, Md.
Joining Mason in the season-opening tournament will be host Loyola (Md.), Mt. St. Mary's and Johns Hopkins.
Action begins Friday at 2 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday at 9 a.m.
The event will be played as a Points Of The Compass draw. At the end of each round, the winners continue their competition in the same direction, while the losers move to a traditional consolation bracket and then to satellite brackets that ensure each team will play four matches.
Each school will enter four doubles teams, and each line of the bracket will be played by opposing pairs. The teams will play an eight-game pro-set doubles match, and the individuals will then face each other in best-of-three formats with the third set played as a super-tiebreaker.
Mason returns the majority of its starting lineup from the 2017-18 campaign. Last season, the Patriots proved to be one of the youngest teams in the nation with a lineup consisting mainly of freshmen and sophomores. This season, the team will still be young, but much more experienced heading into the fall campaign.
No. 1 singles star
Sydney Green returns for her senior season and will most likely assume that role again after competing from the top spot in her sophomore and junior campaigns. Last season's No. 2 singles student-athlete
Brianna Gibbs will look to build on her solid freshman campaign in which she earned a pair of A-10 singles victories.
Sophomore
Hannah Yang – who spent much of the 2017-18 season at the No. 3 position – also is back for the Green & Gold. She garnered A-10 Rookie of the Week honors in January 2018.
Sophomores
Kayleigh Hahn and
Christine McCarthy played No. 4 and No. 5 singles, respectively, as freshmen last season, while junior
Rachel Lee played a number of positions and will be back stronger than ever in 2018-19.
In addition this season, Mason welcomes a talented freshman class which includes
Hannah Harrod (Austin, Texas),
Jackie Nannery (Canton, Mass.) and
Marium Raza (Savannah, Ga.).
