FAIRFAX, Va. – A program record five members of the George Mason baseball team earned 2018 Virginia College Sports Information Directors (VaSID) All-State honors, the organization announced this week.
Mason led the 11 Virginia schools represented on the 2018 University Division All-State Baseball Team with its five selections, including two first teamers.
Junior
Zach Mort was named VaSID Pitcher of the Year, while senior first baseman
Trevor Kelly and rising junior catcher
Logan Driscoll were VaSID First Team selections. Senior
Michael Smith was selected Second Team shortstop and classmate
Tyler Nelin was named Second Team outfielder.
Mort, a native of Chesterfield, Va., became the second-highest draft pick in the history of Mason baseball after being selected by the Chicago Cubs in the eighth round of the 2018 Major League Baseball Draft on June 5. He was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Conference Second Team after finishing the season 6-3 with a 2.48 ERA in 15 starts for the Patriots.
The right-hander led the Atlantic 10 in innings pitched (105.1) and tied for first in the A-10 in complete games (3). Mort ranked second in the conference in strikeouts (108) and starts (15), while finishing sixth in ERA (2.48) and was selected to the 2018 American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) All-Region Second Team.
Kelly, from Yorktown, Va., batted .313 and led the team in home runs (9), doubles (18), RBI (48) and total bases (122) and was second on the club in hits (73) and tied for first in runs scored (43).
Kelly ranked second in the Atlantic 10 in doubles (18), was fourth in the A-10 in RBI (48) and finished sixth in the league in both hits (73) and home runs (9). He was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Tournament Team after hitting .417 (10-for-24) in the A-10 Championship with three home runs, five RBI and six runs scored. Kelly was also named to the 2018 American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) All-Region Second Team.
One of just two players to start all 56 games for the Patriots during the season, Kelly recorded at least one hit in 42 of 56 games, including 21 multi-hit games (13 two-hit, six three-hit and two four-hit). He recorded his 200th career hit on May 17th at La Salle.
Driscoll, a native of Burke, Va., was one of only two Mason players to start all 56 games during the season and was selected to the Atlantic 10 All-Conference First Team and 2018 American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) All-Region Second Team.
Driscoll finished fourth in the Atlantic 10 in average (.342), ranked third in the conference in hits (76), was tied for ninth in the A-10 in runs scored (43) and was 19th in RBI (37). He finished second on the team in home runs (4) and doubles (13).
A semifinalist for the 2018 Johnny Bench Award, Driscoll started 44 games behind the plate for the Patriots during the season. He recorded at least one hit in 43 of 56 games, including 23 multi-hit games (two four-hit, six three-hit and 15 two-hit) and eight multi-RBI games during the 2018 campaign.
Nelin, from Virginia Beach, Va., was selected Atlantic 10 All-Conference Second Team for the second straight year. He started 44 games and finished with a career-best .313 average while ranking third on the team in hits (52) and fourth in doubles (10).
Nelin recorded at least one hit in 30 of 44 games, including 15 multi-hit games (one four-hit, five three-hit and nine two-hit) during the season and registered at least one hit in 14 of 21 games against A-10 opponents during the regular season.
Mason's leader with a .346 average, Nelin was second on the team with 28 hits against A-10 opponents during the regular season and collected the 200th hit of his collegiate career May 2 at Towson.
Smith, from Lorton, Va., finished fifth on the team with a .307 average, fifth in runs scored (24) and was sixth on the team in hits (46) in 44 games (all starts). He was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Tournament Team after batting .467 and reaching base safely 15 times in five games with four RBI, four runs scored and seven walks.
Smith led the Patriots and ranked third in the Atlantic 10 with a career-high five triples. He started all 24 games in conference play and posted a .275 average against A-10 opponents, good fourth-best on the team. He recorded his 200th career hit on May 11th against Saint Joseph's.
