ARLINGTON, Va. – The George Mason baseball team dropped the series opener against George Washington, falling 1-0 to the Colonials on Friday afternoon at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park in Arlington, Va.
Mason (19-24, 9-7 A-10) starter
Zach Mort and George Washington (27-18, 11-5 A-10) starter Jaret Edwards were locked in a pitcher's duel throughout the day.
Edwards tossed a complete-game one-hitter and allowed just two baserunners overall. He retired the side in order in each of the first three innings before Mason senior
Tyler Nelin was hit by a pitch to lead off the fourth.
The Colonials scored the only run of the game in the home half of the fourth inning.
George Washington senior Robbie Metz doubled to start the inning and moved to third on a single. After a ground out, junior Dominic D'Alessandro drove in Metz with a sacrifice fly to center field to make the score 1-0.
Mason senior
Michael Smith had an infield single in the top of the fifth to account for the only hit of the game for the Patriots.
Mort (5-3) allowed one run on five hits and struck out six without a walk over 8.0 innings. He threw 77 pitches, 60 for strikes.
Edwards (4-0) struck out six without a walk over 9.0 innings in the one-hit victory. He faced only 28 batters in the game.
The Patriots and Colonials play the middle game of the series on Saturday with the first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. at Barcroft Park.
