FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason baseball team wraps up the regular season with a three-game series against La Salle, with the first pitch for game one scheduled for 2 p.m. on Thursday at DeVincent Field in Philadelphia, Pa.
Mason (23-25, 13-8 A-10) blanked Saint Joseph's 2-0 on Sunday at Spuhler Field. Sophomore
Jared DiCesare struck out a season-high nine batters in the complete-game three-hitter.
DiCesare was named Atlantic 10 Co-Pitcher of the Week for his effort. It's the second time this season that he has been selected A-10 Pitcher of the Week. DiCesare has allowed just five runs with 25 strikeouts and two walks over 35.0 innings of work in his last four starts.
Mason finished the home portion of the schedule with a record of 15-7. The Patriots won all six of their three-game series played at Spuhler Field this season, taking two of three games from Fairfield, Lafayette, Richmond, Massachusetts and Saint Joseph's and swept a three-game set from St. Bonaventure.
The Patriots have a team batting average of .258. Sophomore
Logan Driscoll leads the Atlantic 10 in average (.366) and is tied for third in the conference in hits (70). He is tied for 11th in the A-10 in doubles (13) and is tied for 13th in the league in RBI (37).
On Wednesday, Driscoll was named one of the 16 semifinalists for the Johnny Bench Award by the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission.
Mason senior
Trevor Kelly is batting .299 and is tied for fifth in the Atlantic 10 in RBI (42). He is tied for eighth in the conference in doubles (15), tied for 10th in home runs (6) and tied for 14th in hits (58).
Senior
Tyler Nelin is hitting .336 and is third on the team in hits (45), while classmate
Michael Smith is batting .272 and paces the Patriots in triples (3).
On the mound, junior
Zach Mort (5-3, 2.33) leads the Atlantic 10 in innings pitched (92.2), is second in the conference in strikeouts (97) and sixth in the A-10 in ERA (2.33). His 13 starts are tied for second in the league.
Senior
Ryan Ricci (4-2, 2.05) is tied for fourth in the Atlantic 10 in appearances (22).
Mason is 4-2 in six all-time meetings against La Salle. The Patriots took two of three games against the Explorers May 13-15, 2016 at Spuhler Field. Mason claimed the first game 2-0, dropped the middle game 5-4 and then won the series finale 9-7.
In their only visit to La Salle, the Patriots won two of three games against the Explorers May 8-10, 2015. Mason dropped the series opener 10-1 before rebounding to win the final two games by final scores of 4-0 and 8-3.
SCOUTING REPORT
La Salle has a 14-38 overall record, including a mark of 4-17 against Atlantic 10 opponents. The Explorers are 6-10 at home and 8-28 on the road this season.
Last time out, senior Brian Dudeck hit a three-run homer in the first inning to give La Salle a 3-0 lead at Delaware on Tuesday, but the Explorers fell to the Blue Hens 8-4.
The Explorers have dropped 13 straight games, including nine in a row against A-10 opponents.
The Explorers have a team batting average of .256. Junior Ben Faso ranks 11th in the Atlantic 10 in average (.330). He is tied for second in the A-10 in doubles (16), ranks fourth in hits (69) and is tied for 16th in the conference in RBI (35).
