NEW YORK – The George Mason softball team finished its five-game road trip with a Sunday matinee in New York against the Fordham Rams. The Patriots notched a couple of extra base hits, but it was the Rams who emerged victorious by a score of 10-2 after six innings.
Sophomore
Alyssa Lawton notched her first career double and extended her hitting streak to four – the longest of her career. Lawton is hitting .417 in that stretch and has improved her season on-base percentage to .382 – third best on the team.
Junior
Jess Curbeira added an RBI-double for her 14
th run driven in this season, and her team-leading 13
th extra base hit. The RBI-hit drove in senior
Brooke Sullivan to extend her team lead in runs to 21.
The series finale was the second game in the last three that the Patriots had at least two players with extra base hits that drove in a run. The next RBI by a Patriot will be the 100
th this season.
"Fordham, along with UMass before them, over the last few years has set the standard for excellence in the A-10. You have to match that standard consistently if you want to run in that pack," head coach
Joe Verbanic said. "We show the ability to do it, we just haven't been consistent enough to reap the rewards."
Sophomore
Madison Aker reached on a fielding error to begin the game, and two batters later RS-junior
Jess Middleton moved her to third with a single. RS-freshman
Adriana Erickson converted a sacrifice-fly for her 10
th RBI of the season and put Mason ahead 1-0 right out of the gates.
Fordham tied it in the bottom of the first but Mason retook the lead in the top of the second with an RBI double by Curbeira. The two-bagger was her 11
th of the season to put her back in the team lead and served as her 50
th total base of the season. The 2-1 Mason lead was short lived as Fordham put up a four-spot in the bottom of the second to go up 5-2.
Sophomore
Bekah Ansbro entered the game in the bottom of the second and limited the damage in that frame. She followed that up by tossing three scoreless innings and managed to get out of bases loaded jams in the third and fifth. The Patriots threatened in their half of the fifth with Lawton's two-out double, but couldn't plate her and the game remained 5-2 in favor of Fordham.
The Rams posted five runs in the bottom of the sixth and put an end to the game with a newly found eight-run lead. Up 10-2 as the home team in the bottom of the sixth, the game would conclude in that fashion.
NEXT ON THE DIAMOND
Mason will return home with a midweek matchup against the Georgetown Hoyas, set for 4 p.m. on Wednesday, April 11. The Patriots will then return to the state of New York to take on the St. Bonaventure Bonnies next weekend, with a noon hour Saturday afternoon doubleheader beginning the action.
