FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason University women's tennis team was defeated 4-2 on Saturday by Colgate, but rebounded the next day and defeated Atlantic 10 foe Rhode Island 5-2.
Both matches were moved away from George Mason's campus because of impending weather around the area. Saturday's matches were moved to Burke Racquet & Swim Club and Sunday's matches were moved to Springfield Golf & Country Club.
On Saturday, the women's doubles teams rolled to earn the point and take a 1-0 lead in the match. In No. 1 doubles, junior
Sydney Green and freshman
Brianna Gibbs won 6-2. No. 3 doubles junior
Nicole Haigwood and freshman
Hannah Cianciola won 6-3.
In singles action, Colgate took control of the entire match by winning four of the five singles matches to clinch the match win. Green recorded the lone singles victory for Mason.
On Sunday against Rhode Island, Mason came out and took the doubles point for the match to take a quick 1-0 lead. Green and Gibbs won 6-4 while freshman
Hannah Yang and sophomore
Rachel Lee won 7-6.
In singles, Lee defeated her Rhode Island counterpart 2-6, 7-5 and 11-9. Green won in singles by a final score of 4-6, 6-0 and 6-2.
The win moved their record to 6-9 and 2-3 in the A-10.
"Great conference win today. Both of the team's played short-handed and battled to the end. I am proud of our fight today," head coach Steve Curtis said.
Mason returns to action Wednesday with a 2 p.m. match against Hampton at the George Mason Tennis Courts.
