FAIRFAX, Va. – Just like on Friday, the opposing team got off to a fast start.
This time, however, the George Mason women's lacrosse team provided an answer.
The Patriots rattled off eight unanswered goals on their way to a 14-6 victory over Duquesne on Sunday at George Mason Stadium. Graduate student
Corinne Wessels continued her stellar season by adding four goals and one assist. Junior
Chachi Kelehan also added three goals and two assists.
Mason (9-3, 3-1 Atlantic 10) bounced back after a sluggish offensive performance on Friday in a 10-6 loss at home to Davidson.
Freshman
Erin Donoghue filled up the stat sheet with three goals, one assist, three ground balls and five draw controls wins. Senior
Hannah Warpinski had a game high seven ground balls and pitched in five draw controls. Reigning Co-Defensive Player of the Week sophomore
Melissa Semkiw recorded 12 saves while the defense only allowed 22 shots on net.
Duquesne (3-8, 1-3) was led junior Haley Matthai and senior Jill Vacanti both scoring two goals apiece, and freshman Michela Connolly dished out three assists.
The Dukes got off to a fast start with a 2-0 lead within the first five minutes. The Patriots didn't panic as Wessels scored less than a minute later. It was the first of two straight goals for Wessels as she scored all four of her goals in the first half. Sophomore
Hailey Johnson and Kelehan scored free position goals just 25 seconds apart and Mason was suddenly up 4-2 with 18:31 remaining.
After Wessels completed the hat trick to push the lead to 5-2 with 17:38 to go in the first half, Duquesne called a timeout to stop the momentum.
In the second half Mason locked down defensively and only allowed two goals and Semkiw posted eight saves, doubling her first-half save count.
The Patriots wrap up a three-game homestand at 6 p.m. on Friday against Massachusetts at George Mason Stadium for the Game of the Week.
