BALTIMORE – The George Mason University women's tennis team put together a number of strong performances in Thursday's match at Loyola (Md.) but could not come out on top, falling to the host Greyhounds in the Charm City.
Mason opened the day in solid fashion, winning the doubles point with victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. The freshmen duo of
Brianna Gibbs and
Hannah Yang won at No. 2, 6-3, while freshman
Hannah Cianciola and junior
Nicole Haigwood clinched the point with a victory at No. 3 9 (7-5). Haigwood and Cianciola have won two straight doubles matches for the Green & Gold.
In singles, play, Mason increased its lead to 2-0 after Gibbs made quick work of her Greyhound opponent. She won her singles match in straight sets (6-1, 6-3).
After Loyola fought back to tie the match at 2-2 with wins at No. 6 and No. 1, freshman
Kayleigh Hahn gave the Green & Gold a 3-2 lead with a confident win at No. 5. She captured the first set, 6-2, then won the clinching frame, 6-3.
From there, Yang and freshman
Christine McCarthy each went three sets in their matches, but Loyola ultimately came out on top to score the last two points of the contest and clinch the match.
Mason returns to action on Saturday at 7 p.m. (approx.) vs. Colgate. The match will be played at the Burke Racquet Club.
