FAIRFAX, Va. –

The Patriots scored seven runs in the second inning and never looked back in the final game of the series against Massachusetts, downing the Minutemen 11-2 on Sunday afternoon at Spuhler Field to win the series.
Mason (18-23, 9-6 A-10) sent 11 batters to the plate in second against UMass (12-21, 5-13 A-10) starter Brooks Knapek and reliever Ben Shields.

walked to load the bases. With two outs, graduate student Frank Sturek
forced in a run with a walk to put the Patriots in front 1-0.
Senior Tyler Nelin
then jumped on the first pitch he saw and doubled into the gap in left-center, clearing the bases to give Mason a 4-0 lead.
Junior Brady Acker
followed with a double, with Nelin crossing the plate to make the score 5-0. After a walk to sophomore Logan Driscoll
, senior Trevor Kelly
collected the third double of the inning for the Patriots, driving in both Acker and Driscoll to extend the Mason advantage to 7-0.
The Patriots scored all seven runs in the inning with two outs. The seven runs tied Mason's season high for runs in an inning. The Patriots scored seven times in the first inning in a 13-12 win over Lafayette on March 18 at Spuhler Field.
The Minutemen got on the board in the fourth and added another run in the fifth inning against Mason starter Jared DiCesare
to cut the lead to 7-2.
In the bottom of the sixth, Nelin led off with a double and with one out, Driscoll singled through the right side to drive in Mason's eighth run of the game.
After back-to-back walks in the eighth inning to Nelin and Acker, Kelly belted a three-run homer over the left-center field fence to increase the lead to 11-2.
DiCesare (3-5) allowed two runs on 10 hits over 7.0 innings and earned the win. He struck out four without a walk. Freshman Austin Cabone
and senior Ryan Ricci
each pitched one scoreless inning.
Knapek (2-5) surrendered seven runs on four hits over 1.2 innings and took the loss for UMass.
Nelin went 3-for-4 with a single, two doubles and a walk. He drove in three runs and scored three runs. Kelly was 2-for-5 with a home run and five RBI. He leads the team with five home runs. Acker, Driscoll and Tassone each finished 2-for-4 in the game.
Every player in the starting lineup reached base at least once, eight players scored at least one run and five players had a multi-hit game for the Patriots.
The Patriots play their final midweek game of the season when they face Towson on Wednesday at Schuerholz Park in Towson, Md. The first pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
