FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason University women's tennis team put together an outstanding singles slate to pick up an important 4-3 victory over Saint Joseph's Saturday afternoon at the Mason Tennis Courts.
After dropping the doubles point, the Green & Gold took four of the six singles matches to clinch the victory. The win is Mason's third of the A-10 season and will help with the Patriots' seed heading into next week's Atlantic 10 Championship.
Trailing 1-0 after doubles, Mason quickly tied it up after a strong performance from freshman
Brianna Gibbs at No. 2 singles. She battled to a 6-6 tie in the first set, before winning the tiebreaker 7-4 to grab the opening frame. Then, in the second, Gibbs cruised to a 6-2 decision. She has now won two of her past three singles matches for the Patriots.
SJU took a 2-1 lead with a win at No. 1 singles, but the Patriots tied it up once more after a gritty effort from freshman
Hannah Yang at No. 3. The Springfield, Va., product won her first set 6-1, but fell in the second, 6-4. In the third and deciding set, Yang picked up a key break and rode it to a 7-5 victory and the match win.
Mason went up 3-2 after
Christine McCarthy took control at No. 4 singles. She won her first set easily (6-2), then held on in a competitive second set to take it, 7-5.
The Patriots clinched the match at No. 6 singles, as junior
Nicole Haigwood dominated in her match. The Canton, Ga., native won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0.
Mason wraps up the regular season on Sunday (April 22) with a short trip to take on Howard. First serve in the nation's capital is set for 1 p.m. at Bannecker Park.
