OLEAN, N.Y. – After two straight losses in conference play, the George Mason women's lacrosse team earned a nice 15-8 victory over St. Bonaventure at Marra Athletics Complex.
Mason (10-5, 4-3 A-10) jumped all over the Bonnies in the first half, including 12 straight goals. Senior
Hannah Warpinski completely dominated the draw control battle and the Patriots finished with a 19-5 advantage.
Freshman
Erin Donoghue had a team-high five goals for the Patriots, while junior
Chachi Kelehan added four goals and graduate student
Corinne Wessels chipped in three goals and two assists.
The Bonnies (0-15, 0-7) played better in the second half, which included a seven goal run, started by freshman Julia Davidson. Mason's first half lead was just too much to overcome. St. Bonaventure was led by sophomore Destinee Johnson and Davidson who both registered two goals.
The past two games against UMass and Richmond, Mason struggled in many of the statistical categories. On Friday, Mason dominated the Bonnies in just about every facet of the game. The Patriots outshot St. Bonaventure 34-17 (26-4 in the first half), only committed ten turnovers the entire game and won the ground ball battle 19-17.
The win over the Bonnies was the 10
th win of the season and is the fourth straight season (all under Head Coach
Jessy Morgan) of at least 10 wins or more.
It was a coming out party also for freshman
Christina Romano who had a career high with two goals and two assists.
All three goalies for Mason saw playing time, as sophomore
Melissa Semkiw got the start and picked up the win. Junior
Elizabeth Benedetto posted two saves in 14 minutes of playing time and senior
Mackenzie Duffy registered 10 minutes in net.
The Patriots continue on the road, playing at 1 p.m. against Saint Joseph's Sunday in Philadelphia.
