RICHMOND, Va. - Richmond's high-powered offense was on full display against George Mason on Sunday afternoon.
The Patriots suffered a 18-11 loss to the Spiders at Robbins Stadium. The Spiders extended their winning streak to seven games and have won nine of their past 11 games.
Richmond (12-2, 6-0 A-10) took control of the game at the 11:52 mark of the first half after senior Kim Egizi scored to spark a string of six consecutive goals by the Spider a 10-3 lead at halftime. The Patriots (9-5, 3-3) came out of the second half on fire, scoring five of the first six goals and cutting the Richmond lead to just three. Less than a minute later, Richmond stopped the Patriots' run and went on their own run with seven straight goals to put the game out of reach.
Just like on Friday against Massachusetts, the Patriots were outshot, struggled at draw controls, failed to clear the ball and turned the ball over. They registered just 20 shots on goal and won 13 draw controls, while the Spiders had 27 shots on goal and won 17 draws. The Patriots struggled to stay out of the penalty box, committing seven yellow card infractions.
Egizi tied the Richmond single-game point total with 11. She posted six goals and five assists. The two leading A-10 point leaders in Egizi and Katie Sciandra combined for nine of the 18 goals and accounted for a point in 14 of the goals. Richmond's defense smothered Mason's star attacker, graduate student
Corinne Wessels, limiting her to just one assist the entire game.
Freshman
Erin Donoghue had a team-high four goals to lead the way for Mason. Junior
Chachi Kelehan pitched in three goals, while senior
Holly Tevis registered three goals and two assists. Freshman
Sammy Ottimo provided a spark off the bench for the Patriots, scoring her second career goal.
The Patriots look to rebound on the road against St. Bonaventure at 4 p.m. on Friday.
